Torres snatches late winner for the Reds

Aston Villa  0 – 1  Liverpool

Fernando Torres scored a last-gasp goal against Aston Villa to snatch all three points for Liverpool at Villa Park in dramatic style.

The Spaniard scored the only goal of the game in the 93rd-minute after the match looked set to end 0-0 and in doing so he has become the fastest player to reach 50 league goals for Liverpool.

Both teams had chances of taking the lead during the game with Steven Gerrard coming close for the Reds in the first half and John Carew coming painfully close to giving Villa the lead with his header going just wide of the goal in the second half.

Both teams also had penalty shouts rejected during the match with Liverpool feeling that Richard Dunne’s tackle on Dirk Kuyt deserved a penalty whereas the hosts, and indeed the Villa fans, were screaming for a penalty when Emiliano Insua appeared to head the ball onto his arm. The referee thought differently.

It was not a spectacular clash between the two sides, and at times a very sloppy affair, but an important game for two teams aiming for a top four finish this season. The win takes Liverpool into seventh position, only four points behind fourth-place Tottenham whereas Villa drop to sixth having conceded more goals than fifth-place Manchester City.

Here are the manager reactions:

Aston Villa manager Martin O’Neill: “We didn’t deserve that. We should have had the game out of sight – Pepe Reina has pulled off some unbelievable saves tonight. We didn’t deserve to lose the match, absolutely not, it’s a cruel blow. But we’ll fight back.”

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez: “The manager has to have confidence in his team. I’m really surprised by the comments about me saying we will finish in the top four. I have to believe in the players. Listen, you have to do it like this, because I am the manager. You keep asking me, and I will keep answering in the same way.”
Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez: “The pitch was not the best, it was a very difficult evening. We just had to keep the belief at the end. It’s very important, but we need to keep winning games to get more confidence. Fernando is a very, very good player, a key player for us and his record is amazing.”

True the match was not the best one. But I am sure it gave a lot of confidence and a chance to break in to the Fab$ for the struggling Kops.

Let’s wait and see how Liverpool comes up in the second half of the season.

I agree that the match winner from Torres was vital in instilling confidence back into the Liverpool side, something which they desperately now need to maintain.

Their match against Tottenham, who are currently flying high in the Premier League, was postponed today due to snowy conditions here in the UK. If Liverpool can win this fixture it will give them major confidence and a real chance of getting back into the top four.
